Ireland’s Extended Post-study Visa for International Students

10 June 2019

Irish Universities provide world-class education and the student is exposed to the vast and vibrant European culture.

Ireland is also famous for the vast number of global MNCs that have made the country their home. This has turned out to be a great reason for International students to study here under the Ireland Student Visa. The article talks about the Ireland student visa process and the attractive stay-back option for International students.

Ireland student visa process in Brief

A student visa must be applied when the course duration is more than 3 months.

After the student selects a university/ institution, from a list of institutions approved under the Irish National Framework of Qualification (NFQ), an application needs to be made to the institution.

Only after acceptance into the institution for the course specified by the student, can the student make an application for the Ireland student visa.

Application for a visa must be made at least 3 months before you plan to arrive in Ireland.

An online application on the Irish Naturalization and Immigration Service website needs to be done.

The specified amount: At least €6000 towards tuition fee and €10000 towards living expenses must be demonstrated to the Irish Visa Authorities.

After this, you need to book an appointment with the VFS, for submitting your documents and providing biometrics.

The verdict is announced in 6 to 8 weeks and if granted the visa will be valid for 30 days and must be renewed in Ireland.

The Option of Post-study Visa

The Irish Government has been very supportive towards International students and previously, its post-study visa option covered a duration of 12 months for graduates and postgraduates studying in the country.

However, according to the new policies, the Irish government has declared that it will grant a post-study visa to students pursuing postgraduate, postgraduate diploma, or doctoral studies for a period of 24 months after their study tenure. This policy is an extension of the Third Level Graduate Scheme for non EU/ EEA students studying in Ireland. At all times the students are required to adhere to the Ireland Study Visa Requirements. This move is part of Ireland’s International Education Strategy, for the benefit of both, passed out graduates as well as the Irish economy, which continues to flourish due to the International talent pool.

Benefits of this Post-study Visa Extension

Passed out students can now effectively look for employment options among the multitude of Irish MNCs. The 24-month stay back option provides students the opportunity of obtaining meaningful experience in Ireland in the domain related to their study.

Ireland is home to MNCs from diverse domains from IT and Engineering, Robotics and AI research facilities to giants in the Pharmaceutical sector. A lot of students find a suitable profile among these companies which are always on the lookout for fresh talent from Ireland’s reputed institutions.

After the 2 months are up, the student can apply for the work permit if the employer is ready to continue with him/ her.

Naturally, on reading about such opportunities available in study-abroad destinations, Indian students may be tempted to start their own overseas journey. However, to take care of all the search and selection process for University and programs, Student Visa Requirements, and even overseas education loans, the best study-abroad consultants may be employed for a hassle-free experience.
