Unified BMS and Security for Smart Buildings Connected to Micro-Grids

21 July 2020

Smart buildings, be it a facility or campus, it offers comfort energy efficiency and security. And if you involve renewable energy to this mix, it will lead to energy consumption and generation. A building management system that incorporates both traditional methods with energy and power management and facility managers will lead to the minimisation of expense by perpetually evaluating real-time energy needs in relation to buying or storing energy.

A traditional BMS has the ability to control and monitor what is going on with the building automation subsystems like ventilation, power systems, security, and fire detection, when it comes down to the smart building, whether a campus facility or infrastructure, it implements both BMS and integrated energy management monitoring systems and electrical systems which tends to include several loads and distributed energy resources.

We live in a hyper-connected environment where cybersecurity is of utmost importance. Here, you should know that facility and security managers both have different objectives and restrictions. On one side, facility managers focus on automation, energy efficiency, manageability, sustainability and the overall cost that goes into building operation. On the other hand, a security manager's objective is to focus on anti-intrusion, be it physical or cyber. In addition to that, the security manager depends on dedicated equipment and segregated networks that may lead to an increase in the staff, power and infrastructure.

Unified Access

If you look from the perspective of building operation, a unified building management interface will provide you with monitoring and control of buildings whereas with a security management interface it enables supervision of both physical and cybersecurity across the premises and the network.|

A research was done by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power & Energy Society general meeting "Facility Using smart Secured Energy & Information Technology" had the objective- prediction of net energy consumption and unified access to both building management and security management systems.

The project revolved around to foster cross-domain innovation between activities which have been traditionally segmented. This research brought together a pool of companies that shred their horizontal expertise that will help create an impact at the sensor, network, security management, and building management.

The result that it led to was a comprehensive smart building system architecture and that architecture is a concept innovating in itself. And, no former R&D initiative had this kind of ambition to integrate energy, facility, security management, IT, and control systems into a more efficient, comprehensive, modular, system of systems.

KPIs and Contextual Mobility

Key performance indicators have been brought into practice as they help synthesize correlated building operations and building security events measures. They are synthesized from four domains that are: energy supply and efficiency; building automation; information and communications technology; and security and safety.

However, maximum situational awareness regarding security and operations roots from the human-machine interface (HMI). So here the contextual HMI helps with personnel managing and maintaining smart buildings in order to have KPIs and other information and necessary controls.

Event Management

A unique situation arises when you use the critical facility for any kind of public events. And this also includes buildings that are designed for industrial commercial or even a university for various events like concert halls, sports arenas, and other cultural festivals.

Here what the BMS system needs to do is address the changing operations of the building in context with a smart grid. What will this do is imply that you take into account the potential sources of local energy (e.g., co-generation, renewable energy, energy stored in electric vehicle batteries).
