No,you don’t need to know everything under the sun to clear this exam. That’s the first thing to get into your head. There is a prescribed syllabus by UPSC for the three stages of this 1 year long exam, i.e,Prelims, Mains and Interview.

A good understanding of UPSC syllabus and exam pattern is the first step for all freshers. Keep a copy of the syllabus on your study table. Also, understand the eligibility criteria for writing the exam.

The syllabus is vast, the aspirant should develop the habit of reading. One can start with NCERT books. Make books your friend. Read NCERT books of class 6-12. Apart from this, make some standard books as your reference book. For example, Laxmikant for Polity. ``Too many cooks spoil the broth’, so keep your sources limited and study from that.

It is a must for every aspirant to have self-written notes. There are a number of notes available in market but having a note written in one’s own words can work wonders at the time of revision. Just go through each topic and while reading jot down important points.

Time to time revision of the topics that you have studied before is important otherwise you will forget everything.

Pay attention to the presentation of your answer because this is what is going to set you apart from other candidates. Practice at least 25 question and answer in a month. Solve previous year questions. Do improve your hand-writing if needed.

Spend at least two hours a day reading newspapers.Read the editorial and economic section thoroughly. Jot down important points. Keep yourself updated with current affairs. This would help you in GS Paper-2 and 3.

Give regular test to analyse yourself and to watch where you stand in a crowd.

Be consistent. For example, if you study for 5 hours a day then be regular and not that one day you studied for 5 hours and the next day no study at all.
